Inexpensive and Quick Ways to Get Rid of Pet Stains

For the many pet owners in Utah County, (aproximately 10,000) our pets are like our children. However, pets have problems. Whether it's age related or just a lack of training, pets have a way of changing our indoor environments. This information is dedicated to assisting you in managing that issue.

Understanding Urine Stains

First, males and females are different. They urinate differently and there are different things in the urine.

Second, unlike humans, there are many kinds of types and categories of pets: Dogs, Cats, Ferrets, etc and many different types of those as well. Each one of these individual types have a different chemical makeup in their urines and need to be addressed with that in mind. There is no fix-all to this problem. That is, there is no over-the-counter fix-all. This should be handled by a professional. Have you ever smelled some of the cleaners used for urine? BOY do they STINK! That's because they are powerful and effective.

What to Do About Them

Here are a few things that you can do to avoid calling a person like me with any kind of frequency:

First, go online to www.petsmart.com and look into their potty training courses. They are cheaper than a professional carpet cleaner, and more effective at eliminating the problem.

Second, if you know where the problem areas are or catch the animal in the act, blot up the affected area with paper towels and apply white vinegar, in a spray bottle, to it. Urine, over time, has a tendency to bleach a carpet. The Vinegar will neutralize both the bleaching effect and the odor causing bacteria.

Just to be safe, allow the vinegar to dwell on the affected area for about an hour. Then, rinse. This can be done one of two ways:

1. The easiest way is, if you have one, use your bissel or rainbow or whatever carpet cleaning system you bought and fill with just clean water...no soap....and rinse it out
2. The next best way is to just use a spray bottle to apply clean water and then blot it out with a white cotton towel. (Cotton is more absorbent)
